The Mean Dynamics is hosting fall auditions on Monday August 25th, Wednesday August 27th, and Wednesday September 3rd! During auditions, prospective members are tested on musicality, blending, and general musical capability (holding a pitch, rhythm, etc.). We welcome people of all majors and music experience levels; all you need is a love for music and a drive to perform.
We love hearing everyone but are especially in need of Tenor-Bass voices and a vocal percussionist. Interested in singing with us? Sign up today!
Audition Dates, Times, and Location:
PLEASE NOTE Room locations are different each day and are as follows:
MONDAY: August 25th and September 3rd from 8pm-10pm in PHYSICS (room TBA)
WEDNESDAY: August 27th from 8pm-10pm in PHYSICS (room TBA)
MOST IMPORTANT! Our rehearsal times are:
Monday 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Physics
Wednesday 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Physics
Only sign up for auditions if you can make AT LEAST 3.5 out of the 4 weekly hours consistently. The missed rehearsal time should only be for regular weekly/monthly commitments such as class. If you have other circumstances that may cause you to miss rehearsal irregularly, please let us know so we can discuss it. Otherwise, if you have to miss more than half an hour a week, we sadly cannot accept you this semester, but we would love to hear from you in the future when our schedules line up better.
Audition Structure:
7 minutes long, including...
Basic info: Name, music and extracurricular experience, voice part
Range test (you will be led through some basic warm-up exercises and vocalizes)
Solo: Prepare up to one verse and chorus of a song (max 90 seconds, no accompaniment, any contemporary genre except classical or musical theater). This is typically a verse and a chorus, but auditionees have the freedom to sing whatever section best showcases their unique voice and style.
Optional sight-reading exercise. This is meant to showcase any sight-reading skills, but previous sight-reading experience isn't required.
Vocal Percussion Audition Structure:
Basic info: Name, music and extracurricular experience, voice part
Range test same as regular auditions (yes, we will test your vocal range even if you will do mainly VP).
Solo: up to 90 seconds of either accompanying a song of your choice or solo beatboxing.
VP "sight-reading": We choose a song, you will get one chance to listen, and then will beatbox along with it.
If selected for callbacks, auditionees will be called back for a group rehearsal to learn a section of a previous Mean Dynamics acapella song. Callbacks focus on collaboration and teamwork skills, as well as interpersonal communication.
*Notice how we said no musical theatre or classical music? It's a bit of a bummer, but that's just one thing that makes our group unique. We specialize in acapella, and perform a wide variety of music from all genres and eras... Just not musical theatre or choral. If you're interested in choral music, we recommend auditioning for any choirs at UNT's world-renowned College of Music. Many Mean Dynamics members have also been members of UNT ensembles like Jazz Singers, Orchestra, Chorale, University Singers, or Camerata, and we highly recommend them if you're interested in classical music opportunities.
If you're interested in musical theatre music, we'd love to point you to Center Stage Musical Theatre, an up-and-coming student group dedicated to showcasing the musical theatre abilities of its members. Center Stage is comprised of students from all majors and specialties, so if you're interested in anything musical theatre whether it be singing, dancing, arranging, or accompanying, we recommend joining them. No auditions necessary!
